I grew up in the suburban Philadelphia area, and I studied French and German in middle and high school. I attended Cornell University from 1973-1977 where I majored in entomology. After college, I did an agriculture 'Praktikum' in Germany, where I gained a pratical knowledge of agriculture (field crops, livestock) and mastered the German language.
I lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where my wife was born, for 26 years, and I worked as a senior research specialist in entomology at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center, an off-campus research facility owned by Virginia Tech, from 1982 until I retired in September of 2005 to become a full time translator. I have done volunteer interpreting for the local Spanish and Haitian Creole speaking agricultural worker population on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. | |
